Evaluation...

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When making my music video I had to consider whether or not it will use, develop or challenge the conventions of the pop/acoustic genre. After doing research and analysing real music videos, I found out that the main conventions of pop videos are the relationship between the lyrics and visuals, the relationship between the music and the visuals and also if the video has a narrative or is performance based. I took them into consideration and in my video I linked the music with the visuals. I believe that the song is very upbeat and is made for ‘girls who want to have fun’ so therefore I directed Becky to dance around and chose scenic environments to emphasise the colourfulness and the mood of the song.

I believe that my music video is narrative and performance based. The narrative of my video is that Becky is in a dream and finally wakes up at the end of the performance. As Steve Archer puts it:“Often, music videos will cut between a narrative and a performance of the song by the band. Additionally, a carefully choreographed dance might be a part of the artist’s performance or an extra aspect of the video designed to aid visualisation and the ‘repeatability’ factor. Sometimes, the artist (especially the singer) will be a part of the story, acting as narrator and participant at the same time." This applies to my video because Becky is the artist and she sings and acts throughout the whole video.

The camera shots and angles can distinguish between music videos and films. For example, in music videos there are a lot of fast cuts and close ups. Fraser talks about this in his book ‘Teaching Music Videos’, “Eye contact and facial gestures via the close up, role playing through the narrative and mise-en-scene will present the artist in a number of ways which would not be possible in a live concert.” This applies to my music video because I have used a range of shots in my music video including close ups. Also Shuker states “for the music video to create a connection with the audience. The lead singer will also sing directly to the camera, this then portrays the singer’s emotions and looks effective on camera.” In every shot of my video, Becky is singing at the camera and I believe this shows the audience it's all about the artist.

Steve Archer says “it is the lip-sync close-up and the mimed playing of instruments that remains at the heart of music videos, as if to assure us that the band really can kick it.” This links with my music video because my artist lip syncs all the way through the video. All the focus is on her which is how it’s meant to be if you’re trying to promote a new artist.

Lighting is another convention of a music video, I chose to film all my video outside in the middle of the day where the lighting is natural and bright. If I had scheduled to re-film and the weather was bad, I would have rescheduled and filmed on a day which was more appropriate. This links to the theorist Richard Dyer- "The singer’s face is continually well lit, and therefore the audience can see clearly their idol."

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The combination of my ancillary texts and main product, I believe, has been quite effective. I did research into real music websites of the genre I chose which is pop. I found out that the websites were colourful and stood out. For example, I looked at Lily Allens (http://www.lilyallenmusic.com/lily/)and she had used a variety of colours which are also used on her CD, this is an effective way to promote the artist. Also they represented the artist/band. On most of the websites I analysed they had videos and audio of their new song. So with all this information, I started to create my website. On my website, I included a variety of fonts in different sizes, many of the fonts were ‘handwriting’ fonts to give the impression that the artist had done it herself, making the audience feel closer to her. The font also says “I am a girl” because it’s all fancy. I used hyperlinks to take you to different pages on the website and also used hyperlinks to direct you to Facebook, YouTube, Myspace etc where you could join her pages; this interaction will draw the audience in. I used the colour scheme black, white and grey because there neutral colours and can appeal to boys and girls. The images used are all original and are used on the CD cover also. I consider this to be effective.

I also did research into CD covers and something that kept popping up was they had used the same font from the website on the CD cover. With this in mind, I used a similar font, not the same (because font variety is good) on my CD cover. I also used one of the images as the front cover, but instead of it being in black and white it was in colour to give a more realistic effect. By using the same image and similar font it kind of gives the artist a brand image so therefore effective when trying advertising the artist/band.

The combination of both the main product and ancillary texts are that they both represent the artist and genre. For example, the music video is happy and reflects the colourful mood of the artist. On the other hand, the CD cover and website, I believe, come across as more sophisticated and therefore shows another side to the artist. My thoughts on a convention of the pop genre is that it has a relaxed feel to it, they're out there to have fun and it comes across in how they are promoted and presented. Therefore I took this into consideration and hopefully my products reflect this.

3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

For our audience feedback we watched the rest of our peers’ music videos and looked at their websites and CD covers and then fed back the good points and improvements we thought would help. I felt that this was the most effective way we would collect the comments. I received both positives and negatives for my video, some of the comments I agreed with and others not quite.

Firstly I received feedback on my video; my audience mentioned they liked the fact that it was all a daydream. This was great to hear because it shows your audience understand the narrative and it shows I used a typical convention of a music video. Other feedback was that there was a good use of shots which meant it was clear and effective. On my draft edit of my video, I hadn’t used that many different shots, but it just shows my re-filming paid off because quite a few people said I had a good use of shots. Another comment was that Becky performs well in it, so therefore she carried the song. This was cheering to know I had picked a great actor to be in my video.

I also received some constructive criticism for my video; my audience said that there is one part where the lip syncing is out but then on other comments I received they praised the lip syncing. It is always good to have different opinions though.

Another comment was the continuity error on her shoes, however, I would like to point out that the converse trainers are not supposed to be on her feet, they are just an image used to create a sense of youthfulness (and also to fill any blank spaces). One personsaid that they felt the shots changed too much, but then went on to say however, that shows good variety and fast cuts are a main convention of a real media product.

I also received feedback for my website; one person said it was nicely laid out and that there was good use of personal touches from the artist such as the smiley face and heart combined with the handwriting font makes it seem like a very personal connection between fan and artist. This was encouraging because that was the effect I was trying to go for as I mentioned in the previous question. The main positive comments were a good layout, good amount of texts, images etc. However, there were only a few negatives; one was that the links to other websites didn’t work and they showed me an alternative way in which they would work, which I did, and they worked fine. To do this all I had to do was add http:// to the beginning of every url.

The CD cover feedback was also positive; a few people said that there was good use of colourful locations used for the images on the inside of the CD; this reflects the upbeat and happy genre of the music. However, I did receive some constructive criticism, for example, I have the same picture on the front as I have on the back, so therefore they said a variety of images would have been better, in addition, someone commented I could flip the image on the back so it doesn’t look repeated.

4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Because the song had to be original, an unsigned artist, it was quite difficult to find one at the beginning, but then I was given a website called unsigned.com and then I found an artist whose song’s I really enjoyed, so then I emailed her to ask for her consent and she sent back the confirmation that I could use her song.

I mainly used the internet during my research stage of the course. I used http://www.google.co.uk/ quite a lot to look at other music websites and to look into the genre and conventions of a music video. Google was very helpful because you just typed in what you wanted and it would filter the results by popularity, so the best result would be at the top of the page. It is a lot easier than going to the library and searching through books. By researching and actually looking at music websites, it helped me with ideas and the construction of my actual website. When I did my research into real music videos I used http://www.youtube.com/ to analyse them. YouTube allowed me to look at any band I typed in which was helpful because it saved me watching the T.V to analyse the music videos; you could pause it whenever you wanted to write down any notes too. I analysed the shots, angles, lighting etc. and also compared them to theorists such as Dyer, Negus and Fraser.

When filming my music video, I used a Sony digital camera and tripod. After doing my AS course last year I was very fond of using the camera and tripod so this was easy to use for me. We used Adobe Premier Pro to edit our videos, which I also used when doing my thriller in my AS course. It is relatively easy to use and navigate to.

I used a programme called Dreamweaver to create my website. This year was the first time I had ever used it and therefore was difficult at the beginning, but when I started playing around, it was becoming easier to use. You weren’t allowed to put images anywhere you liked, so I had to make different tables for each image. For my two images at the top I edited them to go black and white in a programme called Paint Shop Pro. I also did a slideshow of images of the artist in Flash. I had to upload it to my website in a flash player which was fairly straight forward. Some problems I came across was that my website fit into the widescreen computers but on the smaller screened computers, you had to scroll across to see my website, this looked horrible so I had to resize my whole website which didn’t take that long.

The CD cover was created using Fireworks, I used the same picture from my website on the CD cover and also used some images of the artist for the inside. The main problem I had was the canvas size, for some reason it didn’t like the image on the front and back of it so it kept changing to different sizes which weren’t the correct CD cover size. I overcame this by using one of the inside panels (which were the right size), for example INSIDE1 and deleting all the images and writing off of that one and saving the canvas as something different, such as FRONT COVER, so therefore when I opened INSIDE1 all the information was still there and then when I opened FRONT COVER it was just a blank canvas and I could add the image from there.

For my evaluation I just used http://www.blogger.com/ to upload my progress and comment upon my music video and ancillary texts. On my blog I reviewed my research on real music videos and genres to help me with this evaluation. I also uploaded screenshots of my website and CD cover which was fairly easy because blogger.com has its own image uploader. I believe www.blogger.com to be a good useful form of media technology. It is organised and is probably the best way to present our work.

Track...

I have embeded my track from youtube.

We chose this song because it fits the pop genre. It is a happy, colourful song which reflects the artist's personality.

Website Mock Up...

The colour scheme will be black, white, red and blue. This may change when I get round to doing the website.
The font I am considering is a handwriting font or a fancy font, something that represents a girl.

Thursday 17 September 2009

Mock of CD cover...

The picture of the buildings will be taken in Nottingham so therefore it will be an original image.

The font used on the CD cover will be the same font that is used for the website. I think this will make it more effective and make the artist stand out because then the next time you see that font it will remind you of her.

Risk Assessment...

Weather- if rainy or wet, the actor could slip over. If so we would postpone filming and film another day.

Actor falling in lake.

Ducks- might attack the actor. We would stop this happening by not filming near the ducks!

Public- make sure the public doesn't trip over any equipment.

Permission...

Hi Holly,

Thanks so much for your message, and I'm so glad you'd like to use my music for your project. If you could just credit me and direct people to my website, that would be great. I'd love to see the video when it's done.

Thanks again and best of luck,
Amanda

Shooting Schedule...

Dates: 19th September, 11th November and 23rd November

Locations: Wollaton Park and George Spencer School

Equipment needed: Tripod, Sony digital camera

Props needed: bag and ipod

Actors/Actresses needed: Becky

Video recce shots...

I have chosen Wollaton Park for my location. These pictures show the areas of Wollaton Park I want to shoot our music video.

I chose Wollaton Park because the song that I have chosen is quite a summery song and on a sunny day Wollaton Park looks very appealing and it also has stunning views for example the Hall.

Storyboard...

Treatment...

My intentions for the video are simple. I want her to walk around Wollaton Park singing.

I want it to look as realistic as possible and make it appeal to my target audience which is 16-20 year olds who like indie/pop music. It could also appeal to people who enjoy acoustic or live performances.

Firstly she will be sitting on a bench listening to her ipod, then it will be like she has gone into a dream and she will be in the gardens singing and dancing.

For her costume, she will start in jeans and a jumper to make it look like an ordinary day then in the dream scenes she will be wearing a white summer dress and gladiator sandals to give a sense of fantasy. Her hair will be down and wavy. Her make up will be natural.

Brainstorming...

Props Preparation...

I used an ipod to make the audience think that she is actually listening to the track.

I used a bag to make it look realistic, things you have with you on a day to day basis.

Actors/Performer decisions...

I chose Rebecca Rosser to be in our music video because we wanted a female solo artist. I thought she would be confident in front of the camera and she is very attractive so would appeal to everyone. This links with Fraser's theory of voyeurism.

This graph shows that most people we asked enjoy indie music. We took this into consideration when thinking about what track we would use for our music video. For example our solo artist fits this genre well as the music she writes is quite indie based and her image also fits the indie scene.

This graph shows that the target audience are most interested in the visuals in a music video. Closely followed by the video relating to the music. We will take this into consideration when doing our music video. We will mainly focus on good visuals. It will mostly focus on what you see rather than what you hear. Personally when I first watch a music video I like to watch what happens in the video rather than listen to the song.

This graph shows that most people watch music videos online. Closely followed by T.V. Because most people watch music videos online, we can upload our music video to our website.

Research Into Genres.

Our genre's that we are researching are acoustic/pop/rock, we chose these because they fit the target market of our choice which is young people.

Acoustic

Acoustic music comprises music that solely or primarily uses instruments which produce sound through entirely acoustic means, as opposed to electric or electronic means. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoustic_music

Examples of artists/bands that have done acoustic:
  • Jason Mraz
  • Miley Cyrus
  • James Morrison
  • Rhianna

Pop

Pop music is a music genre that developed from the mid-1950s as a softer alternative to rock 'n' roll and later to rock music. It has a focus on commercial recording, often orientated towards a youth market, usually through the medium of relatively short and simple love songs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_music

The term "pop song" is first recorded as being used in 1926 in the sense of a piece of music "having popular appeal". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_music

Examples of artists/bands that fit the pop genre:

  • Miley Cyrus
  • Britney Spears
  • Madonna
  • New Kids On The Block

Rock

Rock music is a loosely defined genre of popular music that entered the mainstream in the mid 1950s. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rhythm and blues, country music and also drew on folk music, jazz, and classical music. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_music

The sound of rock often revolves around the electric guitar or acoustic guitar, and it uses a strong back beat laid down by a rhythm section of electric bass guitar, drums, and keyboard instruments such as organ, piano, or, since the 1970s, synthesizers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_music

There are many types of rock for example:

  • Pop rock
  • Garage rock
  • Folk rock
  • Psychedelic rock
  • Glam rock
  • Progressive rock
  • Hard rock or heavy metal
  • Punk rock

Examples of artists that fit the rock genre:

  • Lostprophets
  • Maximo Park
  • Linkin Park
  • Madina Lake

Research into real videos...

Beyonce- If I Were A Boy

The video I am analysing is Beyonce If I Were A Boy, it is directed by Jake Nava who has done quite a few music videos for Beyonce. The genre of the song is R&B.

There is relationship between the lyrics and the visuals and there are plenty of examples throughout the song. For example, the lyrics are “if I were a boy, even just for a day” and in the video her boyfriend/husband is making breakfast for Beyonce, so therefore it's like they have switched roles and he’s the one caring. Another example could be “and turn off my phone, tell everyone its broken so they think that I was sleeping alone” Beyonce is out with her colleagues and she is flirting with another man, then it cuts onto her husband/boyfriend who is ringing her. The song is basically about how men treat women like rubbish and get away with everything and Beyonce is saying If she were a boy, things would be so different. Near the end the music stops and there is a bit of dialogue, Beyonce says “why you so jealous it ain’t like I’m sleeping with the guy” and then her boyfriend/husband says “what” then Beyonce says “what” and it gets switched around and her husband/boyfriend says “why you so jealous it ain’t like I’m sleeping with the girl”, after that the song also switches around and the lyrics are “but your just a boy, you don’t understand” and the video is of Beyonce making the breakfast and caring for him and he just picks up some food and walks straight out without saying bye.

There is also relationship between the music and the visuals. For example it is quite slow at the beginning so there are not many cuts at all, but when they are in a car chase the tempo speeds up. The video doesn’t really cut to the beat, in some places it does but in others it just cuts randomly, I think it would look better if it cut to the beat though. According to Pete Fraser (Teaching Music Video 2004) there are videos which use slow pace and gentler transitions to establish mood. This is particularly apparent for the work of many female solo artists with a broad audience appeal, such as Dido. Beyonce is another artist who has broad audience appeal and it shows it, in this video she has the most screen time and long takes are used regularly.

If I Were A Boy is from Beyonce’s new album I Am Sasha Fierce. She likes to think she has two sides to her, Sasha Fierce is the more crazy side of her and the songs tend to be more dancy, whereas the other side to her the songs tend to be ballads. In this song the image that Beyonce is going for is the more romantic side, more about love than anything else. As Richard Dyer noted “a star is an image created by a range of materials” so therefore the two sides to Beyonce is a unique and different thing and therefore people will probably be interested in it more. This video is similar to other ones she has done for example, Listen. They are both ballads and about love and how men don’t listen to how your feeling, its just about them.

Although this song is not a sexy one and nowhere in the lyrics does it reference to anything sexual, there is still a bit in the video of Beyonce in her bra. I think this is because voyeurism has become a big thing in music promos. Mulvey came up with the term “male gaze” which is when the males just get so drawn in because of the objectified female on display. Goodwin argues that the female performer will frequently be objectified in this fashion, often through a combination of camerawork and editing with fragmented body shots emphasising a sexualised treatment of the star.

I think the music video is narrative and performance based. Pete Fraser says “Narrative in songs is rarely complete, more often fragmentary, as in poetry. The same is true of music promos, which more often suggest storylines or offer complex fragments of them in non-linear order. In doing this the music video leaves the viewer with the desire to see it again if only to catch the bits missed on first viewing” also "the video allows the audience access to the performer in a much greater range of ways than a stage performance could. Eye contact and facial gestures via the close up, role playing through the narrative and mise-en-scene will present the artist in a number of ways which would not be possible in a live concert", so therefore in Beyonce’s video, on the close ups it makes you feel more intimate and it is more true to life than it would be if you were sat 20 rows back at a concert.

Negus has two ideologies of creativity, one is the organic ideology and the other is the synthetic ideology. I think Beyonce fits the organic ideology of creativity because her image is enhanced by the record company and she became famous in the ‘naturalistic’ way, she wasn’t constructed like people off the X factor or similar T.V reality shows, she became famous because she is good at what she does.

Keri Hilson Feat. Neyo and Kanye West- Knock You Down

The next video I am analyzing is Keri Hilson Feat. Kanye West and Neyo-Knock You Down. It was shot in Los Angeles with director Chris Robinson. The genre again is R&B. A broad characteristic of the genre would be that in the video there is rapping.

Knock you down is the name of the song and it also appears a lot in the chorus, at the beginning of the video Keri Hilson is free falling, so its like someone has knocked her down. The next scene follows her life with her love interest which is Kanye, after which Neyo takes over playing another love interest during his verses. Neyo sings “until I met this pretty little missile who shot me out the sky” in which Keri is on the screen smiling and looking pretty. Before Neyo sings Kanye West is shown free falling so its like he has been knocked down by Neyo. The final part of the video features a split screen which on the left shows what is happening in the present when West sees Hilson talking with NeYo while the right side of the screen relays the first part of the video in black and white. This is to show that it was in the past and Kanye is retelling it in his words.

There is relationship between the music and the visuals. For example the video cuts to the beat, when Kanye West is rapping at the beginning it does straight fast cuts in time with the music. The video changes pace to fit in with the music for example, when there is singing there are more long takes and its at a slow pace, but when there is rapping the cuts get faster. According to Steve Archer music videos can illustrate the meaning of lyrics and genre, providing a sometimes over literal set of images. Here, then, is the most straightforward technique and the classic example of visualisation, with everything in the music video based on the source of the pop song. With this song, everything is based on one thing and that’s love hurts but you have to get over it. The lyrics say “sometimes love comes around, and it knocks you down, just get back up when it knocks you down”.

With 3 very famous R&B artists being in one song, it is obviously going to be appealing to their target audience so therefore will make them want to watch the video and listen to the song. Keri Hilson always collaborates with big R&B stars and most of her songs are about love or sex or a euphemism for them for example, Return The Favour with Timbaland.

The video has been known for its sex appeal due to the fact that Hilson is lying down in bed wearing nothing more than her underwear and an extremely thin see through undershirt. The idea of voyeurism comes from Mulvey, and has been much used in Media Studies, particularly in explaining the gendered pleasures of cinema. Broadly it refers to the idea of looking in order to gain sexual pleasure. In every music video, there has to be some sort of sexual inuendo or euphemism to make it appealing to your target audience.

There are 2 intertextual references in the song, Neyo has a song called Miss Independent and in Knock You Down he sings it in his verse, he even does it in the same tune as his actual song. Another is when Kanye raps “This is bad real bad Michael Jackson” Hilson is shown mouthing the lyrics and grabbing her crotch in a Jackson-esque manner. Pete Fraser says "the music video is often described as ‘postmodern’, a slippery term which is sometimes used as a substitute for intertextuality. Broadly, if we see music promos as frequently drawing upon existing texts in order to spark recognition in the audience, we have a working definition of ‘intertextuality’. Not all audiences will necessarily spot the reference and this need not massively detract from their pleasure in the text itself, but it is often argued that greater pleasure will be derived by those who know the reference and are somehow flattered by this." It basically means that if you understand and know the reference made, it will make the video more appealing to you whereas if you don’t even recognise its there it doesn’t really matter.

The music video is narrative and performance based. Steve Archer says "often, music videos will cut between a narrative and a performance of the song by the band. Additionally, a carefully choreographed dance might be a part of the artist’s performance or an extra aspect of the video designed to aid visualisation and the ‘repeatability’ factor. Sometimes, the artist (especially the singer) will be a part of the story, acting as narrator and participant at the same time. But it is the lip-sync close-up and the mimed playing of instruments that remains at the heart of music videos, as if to assure us that the band really can kick it."

Research into video directors...

Corin Hardy

Videos he has directed include:

  • Fightstar- Waste a moment (2006)

  • McFly- Ballad of Paul K (2005)

  • Dogs Die In Hot Cars- Lounger (2004)

  • Keane- Bedshaped (2004)

  • Keane- Somewhere Only We Know (2004)

  • The Prodigy- Warriors Dance (2008)

  • Guillemots- Annie Lets Not Wait

  • The Horrors- She Is The New Thing

His background:

"From an early age Corin was keen on the mysterious and strangely sinister 70s children’s storybooks, that still inspire his work today along with Ray Harryhausen’s animated monster movies and a love of horror films." http://www.mysteriouscat.com/?page=about

Following a degree in Special Effects at Wimbledon School Of Art he dedicated 5 years of his life to making his stop motion short epic Butterfly whilst supporting himself making low budget music videos, commissioned sculptures and design & artwork for bands.

He is currently signed to White House Pictures (UK).

Analysis of the styles I find impressive:

I like how he uses animation to portray real life situations. “Corin Hardy has returned with another animated winner ... The director’s latest is a bloody expedition with The Horrors, one that certainly lives up to the group’s name.” http://www.mysteriouscat.com/?page=about

He did a video for the Guillemots Annie lets not wait single. The brief of the narrative is an emotional one, largely due to the subtelty of the animation. He uses puppets to portray romantic desparation.

In the Warriors Dance video by The Prodigy, it is awesome how he edits the cigarette packets into little paper people.

Jake Nava

Videos he has directed include:
  • Little Boots- New In Town
  • Britney Spears- If You Seek Amy
  • Leona Lewis- Run
  • Beyonce- Single Ladies
  • Beyonce- If I Were A Boy
  • Beyonce Feat. Shakira- Beautiful Liar
  • James Blunt- Carry You
  • Usher- Burn
  • Robbie Williams- Lovelight
  • Mariah Carey- Shake It Off

His Background:

  • He also does T.V commercials.
  • He is currently signed to Battlecruiser (UK) and FM Rocks (USA)
  • He grew up in Hackney in London.
  • The 2003 video he did for Beyonce's single crazy in love was nominated for a MOBO Best Video Award.

Analysis of the styles I find impressive:

I like how flexible he is, he can work with R and B stars like Beyonce and then work with rock stars like the Rolling Stones.

Also he can do sexy and he can do sweet. For example Beyonce and Shakira's single Beautiful Liar is sexy and seductive but then again, Beyonce's single If I Were A Boy is complete opposite because thats about love etc.

A song is supposed to tell a story and Jake Nava tells a story in the video's he makes. For example in Beyonce's video for If I Were A Boy, it shows her taking the more patriarchal role. But then at the end it all gets turned around again and she's just the girl and her boyfriend/husband is being his typical self again.
